Our minds naturally turn to giving come Christmas time. It's fun to find the perfect present for your loved ones to unwrap, but just imagine if you could do that and help girls around the world have more opportunities at the same time?
That's exactly what will happen when you gift anything from The Body Shop this year. They've partnered with Plan International to help empower girls and young women in Indonesia and Brazil by helping them find employment in a safe and fair environment, or give them the training to start their own business.
Brazil may have one of the top 10 largest economies in the world, but 22 million of its children and young people are living in poverty. Around 52% of people living in rural areas don't have healthy sanitation facilities, and 42,000 children each year die from preventable or treatable diseases before they even turn five. Poverty affects all ages and genders, but young females in particular are often expected to give up schooling and over one in three are married off before they turn 18.
A significant portion of the Indonesian population also suffers from poverty, despite recent growth in their economy. Each year, 152,000 children under five die from preventable or treatable diseases, and over a third are malnourished to the point of suffering stunted growth. As with Brazil, 56% of people living in rural areas don't have safe sanitation facilities.
These horrible statistics are exactly why The Body Shop has set a goal to raise £250,000 (approx. $475,000 AUD) to give to Plan International's programme to provide training and skills for 1,500 girls in these countries.
All you have to do to help is to make a purchase — anything from their cruelty-free make-up line to luxe skincare — between November and December. A portion will contribute to this final goal, supporting girls and young women to achieve their dreams in the process.
