There’s an adorable new instalment in the Despicable Me franchise, and it tells the backstory of supervillain, Gru. Minions: The Rise of Gru takes us back to the ’70s when the animated character was just 12-years-old.

“There are a lot of other villains in the world, but I am going to be a supervillain,” he’s heard saying in the new trailer. As he attempts to gain power, the young criminal is kidnapped, making him loudly declare, “My Minions will save me!”

Gru’s Minions Kevin, Stuart and Bob have returned and alongside them is Otto, a new addition to the group who has “a desperate need to please.”

The movie will not only serve as a biography but will also see the Minions embark on a series of hilarious quests in the hopes to save their leader.

Minions: The Rise of Gru features Steve Carrell as the voice of Gru himself, Julie Andrews as his mother and Alan Arkin as Wild Knuckles. Also lending their voice to the film is Taraji P. Henson as Belle Bottom, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean Clawed, Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, Dolph Lundgren as Vengeance and Danny Trejo as Stronghold. Russell Brand and Michelle Yeoh are also featured among the star-studded cast.

So far, there have been three Despicable Me movies, plus the first Minions movie which was released in 2015.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Universal Illumination was forced to postpone the film’s release, after their studio in Paris was shut down.

“This means we will be unable to finish Minions: The Rise of Gru in time for our planned global releases in late June and early July,” Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, said in a statement at the time. “While we all grapple with the enormity of this crisis, we must put the safety and protection of our employees above all.”

Added Meledandri, “We look forward to finding a new release date for the return of Gru and the Minions.”

Minions: The Rise of Gru will release in HOYTS Cinemas nationwide on June 23.
