5 End-of-Summer Hairstyle Trends That’ll Look Fresh Through Fall (and Beyond)

The year 2020 summed up in one sentence: the only certainty is that nothing is certain. Fall’s response to that? Bring it on.

Transparently, few things these last few months have gone “according to plan,” but this upcoming season will be all about using that fact in your favour – especially when it comes to hairstyles. In fact, the latest trends du jour are intentionally messy, imperfect, and completely unlike what you’ve seen in falls prior. The single common denominator, pros agree, is that texture (and lots of it) will reign supreme.

“Last fall we were looking at more polished hairstyles, such as the sleek Kardashian-esque bobs and high or tight ponytails, but this year brought unprecedented situations that led to so many DIY looks where comfort was king and less was definitely more,” Michelle Cleveland, hairstylist and owner of Hair Addict salon, told POPSUGAR.

“Lived-in texture and easy-to-style looks are what you will be seeing for the rest of the year.”

This, of course, can mean myriad things: “Whether you have a short pixie cut, a shoulder-grazing bob, or longer hair, lived-in texture and easy-to-style looks are what you will be seeing for the rest of the year. This is appealing to people right now because most of us are still stuck in our homes, and have given in to the relaxed and comfortable version of fashionable. It feels like a good way to baby step our way out of our home office style and back into society.”

From braided styles to über-flattering bangs and more, top hairstylists across the country are breaking down five cool hairstyle trends to keep on your radar this fall. That way you can feel certain about something in this uncertain world (and that’s gotta feel good, most certainly).

Hairstyle Trend: Curtain Bangs

The easiest way to get in on the bangs trend – while keeping your overall texture soft and easy to manage – is with curtain bangs. Think: the way a curtain drapes a window. “This is when your fringe area is shaped and cut from shorter on the inside to longer on the outside creating a relaxed look,” said Cleveland. “Right now we are living in a ‘mask on’ era and unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon. For those of us who are committed to looking stylish despite having to wear a face mask, wearing curtain bangs is a great way to keep it as fashionable as possible.”

Hairstyle Trend: Braids

According to Larry Sims, celebrity hairstylist and cofounder of Flawless by Gabrielle Union, more and more people will be trying out cool iterations of braids this fall. Why? For one thing: “Braids are so easy and low maintenance,” he said. “I think we’ll see braids that are waist length but also cut in bobs. The demand for braids will go up, simply because they last so long. People are opting for no-stress, carefree styles.”

Hairstyle Trend: Chunky Headbands

Blame it on the early 2000s resurgence or recent stay-home orders, but thick, chunky headbands are proving to be the season’s best easy-to-execute hair trend. Just slip one atop second-day (or third-day, or fourth-day . . .) hair or a messy ponytail, and voila – an instant style that’s quintessentially Zoom-ready.

Hairstyle Trend: Half-Up Styles

And the award for “most flattering hairstyle to wear with a face mask” goes to . . . the ones that do it halfway, where only the top section of hair is pulled back. “This look is great for those looking to keep the hair out of the face and works with a mask for any outing,” said LA-based celebrity hairstylist Bradley Leake. “If you are also wanting to add a bit of glam add [hair] extensions for additional volume and length.”

Hairstyle Trend: Undone Texture

Yes, that lived-in, just-crawled-out-of-bed hair look is actually quite en vogue this season. “Layered, undone styles will be a big trend in fall,” said Eduardo Ponce, celebrity hairstylist and brand ambassador for Unite. He adds that short-to-long layers are the perfect cut for this messy, loose look, but you don’t need to make any snip decisions to achieve the style. If you have naturally wavy hair, all you need are a few key products.

“First, prep damp hair with [a salt spray] and put it into two french braids before bed,” he said. “The natural sea salt creates a beachy texture while thickening your hair. When you undo your braids in the morning, finish with some [texturizing spray] for effortlessly tousled hair with no stiffness or crunch.”
