Netflix has confirmed that it will indeed be releasing a documentary about Britney Spears and her battle to extricate herself from the restrictive conservatorship that she was placed under in 2008.

The streamer Tweeted an 18-second teaser with an alert promising a full trailer the following day. The short clip features a voicemail left by Spears to a lawyer at 12:29 a.m. on Jan. 21, 2009, in which she says, “Hi, my name is Britney Spears. I called you earlier. I’m calling again because I just wanted to make sure that during the process of eliminating the conservatorship…”

The project is directed by Erin Lee Carr who is the filmmaker behind How to Fix a Drug Scandal and I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs. Michelle Carter — both of which saw her navigating the legal system, courtrooms and delicate subject matter.

Spears, who recently announced her engagement to partner Sam Asghari, addressed a Los Angeles courtroom in June, calling the conservatorship “abusive”, revealing that she was “traumatised” by it, pleading; “I just want my life back.”

“It’s been 13 years and it’s enough,” she said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve owned my money. And it’s my wish and my dream for all of this to end without being tested.”

The singer was then permitted to hire her own attorney, choosing Mathew Rosengart who immediately requested that her father, Jamie Spears, who has had a prominent role in the arrangement, be completely removed from the conservatorship.

Jamie Spears has since agreed to step down from his daughter’s estate “when the time is right” according to court documents.

In the documents, which were filed to the Los Angeles Superior Court, Jamie Spears’ lawyer wrote: “It is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms Spears’ best interests. Nevertheless, even as Mr Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.

“So, even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new lawyer to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator.

“Regardless of his formal title, Mr Spears will always be Ms Spears’ father, he will always love her unconditionally, and he will always look out for her best interests.”

As you might expect, the fervour for the documentary is already at an all-time high with the teaser trailer being viewed over half a million times in less than three hours.

Of course, this is not the first documentary to focus on the Grammy-winning singer and her conservatorship, with 2021’s Framing Britney Spears also investigating the case.
