If Emma Chamberlain Says the Denim Maxi Skirt Is Back, Who Are We to Disagree?

When I was about seven, my mum used to wear this denim maxi skirt that I hated. I had many strong opinions on fashion — even back then.

It was loose and sat on her hips. It didn’t have any shape. I thought it was an “old person” piece.

But I’m ready to admit that I was wrong.

Maybe it was because she was my mum — and we don’t think our parents are cool until we’re actually adults ourselves — or because in today’s Y2K re-emergence I’m seeing styles I thought I hated in a new and refreshing light. But I can’t deny that I’m becoming a huge fan of a denim maxi skirt.

Worn and styled properly, they look effortlessly cool and even a little edgy.

Camila Mendes recently styled hers with a black crop, black boots, a cropped fur coat and sleek black sunnies — which hit the sweet spot between luxe and casual.

While Mendes opted for a more refined look, ‘it’ gal Emma Chamberlain went for a more baggy casual style.

Chamberlain paired her faded denim maxi with an oversized college jumper layered over a button-up white shirt, her look was giving school-core in that chill-but-fashionable way she pulls off consistently.

A denim maxi skirt is basically a more comfy pair of jeans. They work on every body type and can be styled in whichever way you feel suits you that day.

So, if you’re into sleek and sporty, baggy and grunge or dressed-to-the-nines — here are four different denim maxi skirts to shop now.

The SNACKS! The Fun Dip Slice Maxi Skirt ($280) is MOTHER’s homage to throwback styles of the 80s and 90s, reimagined for a new generation. Designed to be worn loose and low at the hips, the skirt features a button fly, floor-length hem and super-high side slits.

NET-A-PORTER

Reformation Jayde Organic Denim Skirt

The denim used to create Reformation’s Jayde Organic Denim Skirt ($283) is made using organic cotton and ‘TENCEL’ Lyocell, so it’s softer than most. It’s cut slim with a fitted waist and has a slit at the back. Given that it’s more midi in length, it’s great for short babes. Style with knee boots or platform brogues.

THE ICONIC

DAKOTA501 Double D Denim Maxi Skirt

The DAKOTA501 Double D Denim Maxi Skirt ($169) is a low rise maxi skirt with back pocket flap design featuring signature Dakota ‘D’ initial embroidery detail alongside the OG rubber back patch logo.

This style is great worn casually (as pictured) or styled up to take you out at night, with a crop and some heels or platforms.

THE ICONIC

Calvin Klein's Jeans Denim Maxi Skirt
