These days, with TikTok and Instagram sending fashion pieces viral (looking at you, $20 Uniqlo bag every person and their dog own) and fast fashion brands producing very similar-looking, trend-based pieces, it can be hard to find clothes that stand out.
One Australian fashion label producing pieces that aren’t like what everyone’s already wearing is Kitten D’Amour. Since it launched in 2003, the brand by Brisbane-based Alana Smith and Simon Griffin has been creating vintage-inspired designs in limited quantities of 100 to 300 pieces per design. The brand also aims to make pieces as ethically and sustainably as possible.
The original Kitten D’Amour brand was created in Paris in 1889 by Smith’s great, great, great grandmother, and today, everything the label does, though designed in Australia, is a nod to her French legacy and the decadence of her 18th-century era. Celebrities like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and The Pussycat Dolls have all been sported wearing its designs.
“The goal at Kitten D’Amour is to create beautiful clothing that will be enjoyed and cherished by different owners over the years, and not discarded after a few wears,” says Smith. “That was the traditional way of dress-making, and I like to think that it’s another way we’re honouring my great, great, great, grandmother, by making exquisite pieces that are made to last.”
The latest collection from the brand is Dorchester Suite 17, which features skirts and dresses that embrace curves, cardigans with frills and lace, and coats and cropped jackets. The collection was inspired by the elegance and opulence of London.
“At the heart of this collection lies a stunning classic plaid design, unique to Kitten D’Amour, expertly combining shades of pink and black,” says Smith. “The fabric design embodies both grace and power, with its juxtaposition of soft femininity and striking allure. It is a timeless pattern that evokes sophistication and confidence, allowing you to make a statement wherever you go.”
