Missing Logies to Swearing on Stage — The Biggest Moments from the 2022 Logie Awards

Coming straight at you from the glittering Goldie, Australian television’s night of nights is back, baby!

After COVID saw the 2020 and 2021 ceremonies cancelled, the Logie Awards finally returned to Queensland’s Gold Coast, and what a night it was.

All (or, most) of Australia’s most iconic celebs walked the red carpet of the Star Resort on the Gold Coast, before heading into the award ceremony.

Gold Logie nominee Julia Morris hosted the event, which featured everything from a bit of an award mishap to a moving tribute to the late, great Bert Newton.

Here are the most iconic moments from the 2022 Logie Awards.

Julia Morris’ Iconic Opening Monologue

Gold Logie nominee Julia Morris opened the show, sporting a blue suit with glittery pink sneakers.

“No big song and dance number from me tonight, I’m too old and I’ve broken my shoes,” she said.

Morris’ opening monologue addressed everything from the wage inequality, to cancel culture to Twitter, which she called “a super outdated place where grumpy people go to complain”.

“The deal was that I was allowed to open the show as long as I was dressed like a man,” Morris said, adding that anyone who was mad about it at home could “just take off their glasses and squint a bit”.

Lego Masters Australia Winning

Lego Masters Australia was the first award presented for the night, only, by the time they got up on stage to accept the award, the Logie… wasn’t there.

“There isn’t actually a Logie,” Hamish Blake said. “Joke’s on us! Long run up, but, excellent prank! But, if we did get a Logie…”

Thankfully, the Logie arrived soon enough, and they were able to actually accept the award.

Chrissie Swan Shooing the Home and Away Cast Off Stage

When Chrissie Swan and Karl Stefanovic came out to present the award for Most Popular Lifestyle Program, Swan noticed the Home and Away cast still lingering onstage after their big win for Most Popular Drama Program.

Without missing a beat, she yelled: “Stragglers! Get back to the café, Irene!” to Lynne McGranger, who of course plays Irene on the iconic show.

The line, and Swan’s entire bit with Stefanovic, was a hit on Twitter.

The Moving Tribute to Bert Newton

Bert Newton was one of Australia’s most beloved television presenters, so of course, the tribute to him was bound to be emotional.

Bert had hosted the Logies 19 times — including the very first Logies — prior to his death in October 2021. He was 83.

The tribute began with a montage that spanned Newton’s career, before his wife Patti greeted the audience, who gave her a standing ovation.

“Oh, thank you, dear me,” Patti began.

Noting that her feelings about Bert’s death were still “very raw”, Patti said she’d “never get over him not being here”.

Patti went on to share how Bert “never complained” and “always tried to find something to look forward to”, even throughout his health struggles.

“Not everybody lives their dream, but he did, and he loved it,” she said.

Noting that “the one thing he really loved was this, the Logies,” Patti said that she’d been wondering how he would’ve reacted to the show renaming the most popular presenter award The Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter.

“I’m absolutely certain he’d say ‘what? Not the Gold, then?'” she joked.

Patti then announced Hamish Blake as the winner of the first Bert Newton Award, who said he was feeling emotional to be the first to accept the renamed award.

“There will never be another Bert,” Blake said, crediting the TV icon’s “the support and generosity” that went beyond the screen.

Wrapping his speech up, he added: “I really hope that future people who get this look back and understand the man it was named after.”

The Neighbours Tribute

The Neighbours tribute included everything from cars exploding to dog dream sequences, fights and emotional hospital scenes, and of course, Scott and Charlene’s iconic wedding.

However, many fans of the series watching the show felt that it wasn’t a big enough tribute, noting that they could have gathered the cast onstage for a standing ovation or that the package could’ve been more substantial.

Tom Gleeson and Sophie Monk

Odd couple Sophie Monk, the Logie’s ambassador, and comedian Tom Gleeson sparred onstage to the delight of the audience.

During the bit, Monk announced to Gleeson that she was “a Goldie girl” to which Gleeson replied “we can tell”.

When Monk compared her role as the Logie’s Ambassador to being in the United Nations, Monk quipped, “what’s the UN?”

They dynamic duo went on like this, with Monk saying: “He might come off like a d**khead a**hole, but he’s actually really nice!”

To which Gleeson replied: “Thanks, trashbag!”

The audience at home loved it.

Tony Armstrong Wins Logie For Outstanding New Talent

Tony Armstrong won the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular Newcomer and what a well-deserved win! In his speech, Armstrong held his Logie high and said to ABC news director Justin Stevens, “Contract negotiations, mate…we’re on!” 

He then went on to thank his mum, who has been by his side from the very beginning.

“She’s done everything for me, she’s a superstar, I wouldn’t be up here without her…please give her a clap, she’ll love it back home.”

The former AFL player and host of NITV’s Yokayi Footy continued to thank News Breakfast’s producers for trusting him and the National Indigenous Radio Service for appointing him as the first Indigenous play-by-play caller on commercial radio. 

“If I hadn’t started calling … I wouldn’t have ended up here at the ABC,” he said.

Hamish Blake Wins the Gold Logie

Hamish Blake has taken out the most prestigious award of the night, the coveted Gold Logie.

Taking to the stage, the Lego Masters host said: “What a huge honour. I know it’s very late. I will try and be brief. First Gold Logie in five years to not be decided by Tom Gleeson. That is massive,” he joked.

“All the people that come together to create Lego Masters. My beautiful wife, this is — you don’t get to stand up here unless you have amazing people behind you. You’re the most amazing of people.”

This is the comedian’s second Gold Logie. He won his first back in 2012.
