The Most Exciting Games Releasing in 2022

Stray

Next year is going to be big for games. There are some huge releases scheduled for 2022, including a few new games that have been pushed back due to the pandemic. There are still quite a few with a generic “2022” listing, so there’s a chance some of these will get pushed back even further, but the list of new games in 2022 is looking great so far.

Below, we’ve rounded up the best new games in 2022. There are PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch games included in the list, and a mix of single-player and co-op titles. There are even some remasters, which have us excited to experience some of our favourite games all over again with 2022 graphics. We’ve also listed each game’s release date so you can add them to your calendar and your wishlist.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Release date: January 28

Platforms: Switch

One of the first big releases of the year is the remaster of the very first open world Pokémon game. You’ll discover new Pokémon like Wyrdeer and new regional forms like Hisuian Growlithe, and uncover the mystery surrounding the mythical Pokémon Arceus.

Horizon Forbidden West

Platforms: PS4, PS5

Five years after Horizon Zero Dawn, we’re finally reuniting with Aloy to explore the mysterious frontier of the Forbidden West. Guerrilla Games has been drip feeding us details about Aloy’s new abilities and the fierce machines she’ll be facing in the lead up to the Horizon Forbidden West release, and we’ve even caught some videos showing off the game’s stunning, colourful landscapes and the new underwater segments.

Elden Ring

From the minds of Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaka, Elden Ring is one for everyone who’s itching for their next dark fantasy fix.

Starfield

Release date: November 11

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S

The new game from the Skyrim creators will see us trade in swords and dragons for spaceships and the stars. We still don’t know much about Starfield, but we do know it’ll be an open world RPG set in space that lets you “explore with unparalleled freedom as you embark on an epic journey to answer humanity’s greatest mystery.”

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

Release date: 2022

Platforms: Switch

Nintendo is staying tight-lipped about BOTW2, but they’ve at least confirmed it’s planned for release in 2022. Our best look at the sequel so far came from from the Nintendo presentation at E3 2019 — even though it was short, it showed us magic, monsters, creatures, and an ominous shot of Hyrule Castle rising up out of the ground. The first game released in March 2017, so it would be a nice five-year anniversary event if Breath of the Wild 2 releases in March 2022.

Stray

Release date: 2022

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5

Play as a stray cat and try to uncover an ancient mystery to escape a futuristic city filled with robots in Stray. The game’s official website promises we can “Be stealthy, nimble, silly, and sometimes as annoying as possible with the strange inhabitants of this foreign world.” Sounds like pretty typical cat behaviour. Cute.

Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope

Release date: 2022

Platforms: Switch

Mario + Rabbids is a strange concept: who thought to combine Mario with Ubisoft’s Raving Rabbids franchises and turn it into a colourful Nintendo strategy game? Well, whoever had the idea, it turned out to be a good one, and a sequel to the runaway successful Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

Park Beyond

Release date: 2022

Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S

For fans of RollerCoaster Tycoon and management sims, Park Beyond is a new theme park sim where it’s perfectly acceptable to create rides that defy gravity. Besides creating the literal ride of your dreams, Park Beyond will also have a story mode driven by player choice.

Hogwarts Legacy

Release date: 2022

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

From what little we’ve heard so far, Hogwarts Legacy will be the game every Harry Potter fan has always dreamed of. You’ll play a witch or wizard attending Hogwarts and learn spells, brew potions and tame fantastic beasts in this immersive open world RPG.

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals

Release date: 2022

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch

The first Oxenfree was a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who accidentally open a rift to another dimension. It was simple but gorgeous, and featured some of the best dialogue in a video game. Early reviews for Lost Signals make it sound like the sequel improves on all of these things, so get ready for another mind-bending adventure.

Ghostwire Tokyo

Release date: 2022

Platforms: PC, PS5

Not much has been revealed about Ghostwire Tokyo yet, but the announcement trailer showed you using supernatural powers against terrifying monsters from Japanese lore. It looks weird and spooky — but best of all, you can pat dogs in the game.
