People Are in Love With the New Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Starters

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were announced during this morning’s Pokémon Presents livestream — they’re new, open world Pokémon games in the style of Arceus with a more modern story and art style like Sword and Shield. The trailer shows rolling green hills, placid lakes and sprawling cities, as well as lots and lots of cute Pokémon. But none are cuter than the three starter Pokémon, which the internet is currently falling in love with.

A grass-type kitten named Sprigatito, a fire-type croc named Fuecoco and a water-type duck named Quaxly are the Pokémon you’ll choose between when you start Scarlet and Violet, and for the first time ever, I don’t know which one I want. According to the game’s official website, Sprigatito is capricious and loves attention, Fuecoco is laid-back and Quaxly is earnest and tidy. He also has a cute hat!

Game Freak has said that: “Various towns blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders. You’ll be able to see the Pokémon of this region in the skies, in the seas, in the forests, on the streets — all over! You’ll be able to experience the true joy of the Pokémon series — battling against wild Pokémon in order to catch them — now in an open-world game that players of any age can enjoy.​” It sounds like an even bigger and more immersive open world than Arceus and it features big cities and the traditional Pokémon story that was missing from that latest game.

Scarlet and Violet was the highlight of the livestream, which also announced the free Daybreak update for Arceus and an anime adaptation, new creatures for Pokémon Go and the mythical Shaymin in Pokemon Diamond and Shining Pearl. You can watch the full livestream here, but we’re here to talk about Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly exclusively. People online are losing their minds over the new starter Pokémon and making some excellent memes to celebrate.
