PlayStation’s Project Q is officially launching with a brand new name. Now known as PlayStation Portal — the handheld device is set to launch later this year, at a reasonable price point of USD $199.99 (AUD $309). But, before you add it to your holiday season wish list, there’s a catch.

Unlike the days of the PlayStation Portable, which allowed you to purchase physical game discs — the Portal requires you to have an existing PS5 console. According to the gaming brand’s blog, the handheld device will allow you to play games that are already installed on your PS5, via Wifi. However, PS VR 2 and PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming games, are not supported.

This handy remote gaming experience will allow you to continue your adventure in 1080p at 60fps, even if your TV is occupied. Or, maybe you just want to step away from your television and play from the comfort of your bed. You’ll also be able to utilise a similar controller interface too, with a split Dualsense controller built into either side of the 8-inch LCD display. Although the controller pieces are separate, they still include haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

As for the audio, you can either plug straight into the Portal’s 3.5mm port or grab one of PlayStation’s new listening devices — The Pulse Explore Headphones and The Pulse Elite Earbuds. Both support lossless audio quality and can be used across consoles and mobile phones too.
