POPSUGAR Australia: What has been your highlight during the competition so far?
Billie McKay: The whole experience has been so amazing for me but the Pressure Tests that I’ve been in have been very memorable — especially Darren Purchese’s ‘Passion Flower’. I also loved cooking Marcus Wareing’s veal dish. I learnt so much in those short few hours and the sense of pride and relief at the end of each is just priceless!
PS: What looks easy on TV but is totally different in real life?
Billie: The pressure in that kitchen is truly tremendous. Having watched past series myself, I didn’t think that the pressure would be so intense but after experiencing it myself now, it’s safe to say it’s so much more crazy and intense than it looks!
PS: What has been the most surprising thing about living with so many fellow foodies?
Billie: It’s just wonderful to be around so many people with the same passions and aspirations. One of my favourite surprises is that in the MasterChef house I’m not judged for how much butter I put on my toast! In fact, it is generally encouraged to use more! I love my butter and I think that is a passion we all share!
PS: What have you missed the most from the real world, aside from family and friends?
Billie: I guess I miss the freedom of being able to jump in my car and go to a movie with my boyfriend Haydn, or just for a drive! But I know how much of an excellent opportunity being a part of MasterChef is, so I know it’s all worth it!
PS: If you win, what are your plans for the money/prize?
Billie: I have always wanted to own my own restaurant outside of the big cities. I’m passionate about the country and I want to ultimately have a bit of land around my restaurant to farm my own produce. So winning the title of MasterChef 2015 would certainly help me on the way to do that!
PS: Aside from yourself, who would you like to see win, and why?
Billie: I believe Georgia really deserves to win. I get along so well with her and she is a genuine and lovely person. Along with Georgia, I think Reynold has amazing talent and a real dream. He lives and breathes food, especially desserts, and I really think he deserves it too!
