Who Is Maggie Beer?

Maggie Beer is not just an icon; she is an essential ingredient in any conversation about food and flavour. Her culinary journey began in 1973 when she and her husband, Colin, settled in South Australia’s Barossa Valley. Their initial intention was to breed pheasants, and their passion for showcasing the uniqueness of these birds led them to establish the Pheasant Farm Restaurant in 1979. Maggie’s culinary expertise and Colin’s vision propelled the restaurant to become a part of Australian food history.

The Pheasant Farm Restaurant gained acclaim and was awarded the prestigious Rémy Martin Cognac – Australian Gourmet Traveller Restaurant of the Year Award in 1991. However, due to Maggie’s burnout, the restaurant closed its doors in 1993, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.

In 1996, Maggie Beer Products emerged, with the establishment of the Export Production Kitchen in Tanunda. This marked the birth of a popular and exciting food brand that bears Maggie’s name. After 23 years of hard work and success, Maggie and Colin sold Maggie Beer Products to Long Table, an ASX group, in 2019. Maggie remains connected to the business as an Ambassador and Board Member of what is now known as Maggie Beer Holdings.

While the ownership of Maggie’s Farmshop, The Eatery, and other parts of The Pheasant Farm transitioned, the legacy and essence of Maggie’s connection to the Barossa Valley remain intact. The family continues to own and operate these cherished establishments, including vineyards, olive orchards, fruit orchards, and Maggie’s B&B Orchard House in Nuriootpa, South Australia.

Maggie Beer attributes much of her success to the Barossa Valley, recognising the region’s beauty, bountiful produce, strong sense of community, and collective pride.

Maggie has many beloved cookbooks and has appeared on culinary TV programs including “The Great Australian Bake Off” and “The Cook and The Chef”.
